Cycling in south west Scotland ...
Did you know that Dumfries and Galloway is the home of cycling? The bicycle
was invented by Kirkpatrick McMillan near Thornhill in 1840.
This area offers the place and pace to suit the cyclist, with unspoilt scenery, contrasting landscapes, a mild climate and a wealth of history and heritage to explore. There are a number of signposted routes here in the Machars –ask at reception. In fact if you want to cycle and then plan with us in advance we can arrange to come and collect you, especially good if the weather looks like changing!
However, if you are looking for exhilarating action, try one of the off-road trails or mountain bike centres.
Glentrool – huge, rolling hills, breath-
taking scenery and awe-inspiring views make this a big day in the saddle.
Over 45km, mostly on fire road and hill track, the Glentrool trail was
opened in late 2004 and is already proving to be very popular.- Kirroughtree – The Highlands in miniature….single track twists
tightly through the trees, over technical rocky sections and climbs, leading
to the vast expanse of the largest rock trail feature in Britain.
Visit the Forestry Commission 7stanes web site to find out more about the 7Stanes Cycle Route - includes Glentrool and Kirroughtree trails.
